引子 - Previous Discussion

I posed a question in autobrr discord channel:
On Chinese indexers where NexusPHP is the mainstream, I see nearly every site is using RSS for torrent auto-grabbing. So since RSS is more resource consuming while irc is just performing better, I'm a bit curious about why irc is less used in Chinese sites. Is IRC less friendly to setup with NexusPHP or are there other historical reasons?
@ze0s: It's interesting why actually, not really sure exactly why it is that way but IRC was never big in china (to my knowledge) and everyone is using Telegram instead. I don't know if anyone does announces on TG but we could easily support it.
I gave my historic assumption:
I guess it's because there's little knowledge of irc you can get out of CHN search engine baidu.com, since google/wikipedia is banned, and baidu never cared that much about content and wiki curating
@ze0s: that might very well be the case yeah

On further thoughts and contemplations, another theory occured to my mind on irc rarity in Chinese trackers besides historical reason and google ban, here are several points you may find interesting:

General circumstance in CHN trackers

1 Differences and often scenarios

NexusPHP’s categorizing management is a disaster compared to Gazelle, so dupe torrents are hard to find, nor timely removed on site, resulting in chaos when users search. Often, there are torrents of same codecs. The only diffrence is the group name and the often reason they are allowed is that they contain different sub mods (which are often bilingual - chs&eng) or Chinese audios. And this has lead to less strict standards and monitors about versions of a torrent. So ppl would naturally need to select torrents based on groups they like. Here I want to make clear about source of a chs&eng sub, which is often provided officially on platforms, or translated by anonymous fans/subgroups. So ppl that made the sub often is not the release group on tracker that modify the sub from features like fonts / translation / timeline issue / SFX / OCR. So basically general public do have to wait, before their favorite group cook a perfect sub on a new BD / WEB release. Of course, expertise in English opens up one’s direct access to original content, eliminating the translation delay or the need for cooked bilingual subs.

2 Constantly updating versions

Release groups in Chinese tracker tend to make multiple versions on the same episode/movie for tiny upgrades in subs (e.g. a translation improvement / SFX motion of subs / fix sub errors), in extreme cases, version could even be built up to “V8” of a release. So users often need to wash / replace / redownload the same content, god knows if there will be a V9 release after a random time XD. There are always ways to perfect it more.

3 Fandom is not a popular thing in China

CHN groups are not that keen to scene racing, while equally unenthusiatic about fandom or nerdy things (or they do, but not to the extent westerners do, e.g. millisecond level race in scene races).

What's the relationship between these observations and unpopularity of IRC & IRC announce channel in China?

First, IRC is a nerdy and fandom thing in my opinion. Only tech nerds get into it and knows how to master it, don’t get offended :) It’s an English thing with a steeper learning curve: nickserv, connect commands, channel URLs (learning English itself is hard enough for Chinese, XD). So why not cling to what’s more popular and accquainted to you - RSS?
Second, rather than waiting for release from scene or racing groups, it’s more preferable for Chinese users to wait for a fully cooked sub, not to mention there’s CHN local shows and JPN animes (always with CHN subs, no need to wait for translation) to watch. So more often, monitoring western releases is not a priority, where 1 minute and 15 minutes does not make much of a difference, so no irc needed.

It’s a cultural thing, it’s human nature to choose the easier way

Since technology emerged and developed, there’s always computational resource redundancy. People are always doing less with more. Just put everything in a webapp and Electron. Voila, the app you need, your needs are met. Why setup IRC when you have RSS? Why bother to use IRC when servers are capable of handling mass RSS requests and server costs are not an issue? At the end of the day, it’s not my wallet that pays the bill? Even if it get set up the thrifty way, what if no one cares? But complain about all this IRC nonsense - why make me learn this acient tool? With all this at hand, why restrict ourselves to minimal resource utilization? Why turn off the tap if water fees are not charged to you?Why keep documents categorized, when you can access them right on desktop though scattered all around?

Just like switching off for Earth Hour, why bother do this when we have all the electricity in the world? Why restrain ourselves when millionaires are taking private planes flying everywhere?

But we can do better.

I always have my respects for developers who commit to simplifying their code from the ground up, optimizing softwares for better performance and user accessibility. I hope this IRC discussion ultimately reflects a broader ethic of responsibility, for the sustainable choices we make - regardless of who bears the immediate cost.
In my philosophy, it’s always us, and our offspring that bear it all. Sustainable practices aren't just optional - they should be integrated into every possible facet of our lives.
  • NexusPHP integration & IRC
  • IRC在国内的实际发展情况
  • why fandom is not a popular thing in China:为什么fandom和一些nerdy things在中国不成气候
